The Bahamas is one of the best places in the world for those looking for an island get-away. Since attaining a peaceful independence from the United Kingdom in 1973 the Bahamas has flourished, with tourism as its leading industry. The Bahamas is also one of the leading international offshore financial centers in the world. Located just 60 miles off the coast of Florida, the Bahamas is made up of over 700 islands and 2,400 cays, of which only about 40 are inhabited. A few facts on the Bahamas: GOVERNMENT TYPE: Constitutional, parliamentary, democracy LEGAL SYSTEM: Based on English common law LANGUAGE: English CAPITOL CITY: Nassau, New Providence POPULATION: 300,000 LITERACY RATE: 98% ECONOMY: Stable, with a developing economy heavily dependent on tourism which accounts for more than 60% of the GDP. CURRENCY: Bahamian dollar which is equivalent to and interchangeable with the US dollar. The B$ is stable, with no fluctuations or devaluations.
